Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke Election Law Mandate obtained to consider Potential Amendments

The Kahnawą:ke Legislative Commission wishes to announce that the Mandate to review and consider potential amendments to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke Election Law was obtained at the Community Mandate Meeting held on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at the Golden Age Club, with the following Scope of revisions:

  • Ensuring consistency with other Kahnawą:ke laws;
  • Streamlining processes including selection of the Electoral Officer;
  • Proposed amendments from community members regarding Council composition, vacancies in Council and an alternative election structure, etc.

The three (3) Community Representatives selected to sit on the Technical Drafting Committee (TDC) are:

  • Lynn Delisle
  • Shotehra Rice
  • Heather Jacobs Whyte

The next step will be for the proposed amendments to be reviewed, considered, and inserted into the current version of the Law using track changes and posted on www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com for a 30-day feedback period. A press release will be issued once the document is available for community review.

Following the Feedback Period, the TDC Technician will compile a Feedback Report which will be posted on www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com and addressed during the Hearings in Phase II. The community will be informed once the CDMRP First Hearing date has been scheduled.
