Proposed Labor Law advances with defined purpose and scope

08/07/2025

The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Commission (KLC) wishes to advise the community that the proposed Kahnawà:ke Occupational Safety and Health Law (now referred to as proposed Labor Law) has received its mandate and approval of its purpose and scope from the MCK Ratitsénhaienhs and will now proceed to the Community Decision Making and Review Process (CDMRP).

Additionally, the proposed legislation has been categorized as a Type II. The revised submission request was made by the Kahnawà:ke Labor Office (KLO) and received by the KLC on April 30, 2024. The above decisions were passed by consensus of the MCK Ratisénhaienhs at a legislative session (duly convened Council meeting), held on August 4, 2025.

According to the proponents, the focus of the law will be on the following areas: 1) workplace accidents and occupational diseases; 2) occupational health and safety; and, 3) labor standards. The proposed Labor Law will enhance the well-being of employees, and all workers and employers will be covered by the law.

The KLO will embark on an information campaign and will prepare a detailed schedule of various community and stakeholder engagement activities to discuss the proposed law.
